Former MP Margaret Hodge has been appointed as the UK’s new Anti-Corruption Champion, tasked with leading efforts to tackle corruption and illicit finance both domestically and internationally. The announcement was made by Foreign Secretary David Lammy during a visit to the National Crime Agency (NCA).

Hodge, who served as MP for Barking and held key positions such as chair of the Public Accounts Committee, is well-known for her advocacy against corruption and money laundering. In her new role, she will collaborate with Parliament, the private sector, and civil society to combat organised crime and corruption.

Lammy emphasized the threat corruption poses to the UK, stating it fuels criminal activity worldwide. The UK government also committed an additional £36 million over five years to support the NCA’s international anti-corruption efforts, focusing on cross-border corruption and money laundering.

Hodge expressed her commitment to eradicating illicit finance and praised the opportunity to lead the charge against corruption. Additionally, the Foreign Office announced sanctions on five individuals, including notorious gold smuggler Kamlesh Pattni, to disrupt the illicit gold trade tied to money laundering.
