Benny Gantz, leader of the National Unity party, has criticised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for hindering efforts to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas, accusing him of undermining negotiations. Gantz pointed to Netanyahu’s frequent media statements as a destabilising force during such a “sensitive” period, urging him to refrain from making political moves at the expense of the hostages’ return.
The National Unity chairman stressed that a deal prioritising humanitarian needs and national security was crucial. He warned Netanyahu against blocking progress for political reasons, particularly after Netanyahu told The Wall Street Journal that he would not agree to a ceasefire before Hamas was removed from Gaza. While Netanyahu’s stance aligns with Israel’s broader objective of dismantling Hamas, reports indicate Hamas might agree to a phased hostage release, without committing to an immediate cessation of hostilities.
Gantz also addressed Netanyahu’s comments regarding Hamas’ proximity to Israeli towns, reminding the Prime Minister that Gaza’s strategic importance makes it unacceptable for Hamas to maintain control. He highlighted the urgency of securing the return of the hostages, many of whom were taken from towns such as Nir Oz and Be’eri, which are situated close to Gaza.
With the situation remaining tense, Israel’s political leaders remain divided over the best approach to both ensure national security and address the humanitarian crisis, as negotiations with Hamas continue to stall.
