At a ceremony welcoming Israel’s new Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, Israel’s incoming Defense Minister Israel Katz declared that Hezbollah had been defeated on the battlefield. Katz highlighted the elimination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah as the “crowning jewel” of Israel’s efforts against the militant group.
The statement comes shortly before Hezbollah launched a rocket barrage into Israel’s Western Galilee, followed by additional attacks on Metula and northern regions. No injuries or damage were reported from the strikes.
Katz, who replaces Sa’ar as defense minister, stated that his primary goal would be to “change the security reality in the north” and ensure Hezbollah no longer poses a threat to Israel. He also emphasized that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons would be a top priority for his tenure.
Reflecting on his tenure as foreign minister, Katz took pride in Israel’s diplomatic efforts, particularly its ability to preserve international legitimacy and avoid pressure from global bodies calling for an unconditional ceasefire.
Katz’s remarks come at a time of heightened tensions in the region, as Israel continues its military operations to weaken Hezbollah and curb Iran’s influence.
