Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz visited the peak of Mount Hermon earlier today, on the Syrian side of the border, following its capture by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) last week.
The site holds strategic significance for Israel’s defense, serving as a critical vantage point for monitoring threats. Katz emphasized that Mount Hermon serves as “the eyes of the State of Israel,” essential for detecting both immediate and distant threats. The IDF is stationed at the peak to protect the Golan Heights and Israeli citizens from various security risks.
Netanyahu and Katz were accompanied by senior security officials, including IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, Shin Bet Chief Ronen Bar, and IDF Northern Command Chief Maj. Gen. Ori Gordin. During their visit, they conducted an assessment of the military’s new posts on the Syrian side of the mountain.
Katz stated that the IDF would maintain its presence at Mount Hermon for as long as necessary, enhancing security, observation, and deterrence. He pointed out the site’s strategic importance in deterring Hezbollah’s influence in Lebanon and countering extremist factions near Damascus.
