A knife attack at East Street Market in southeast London on Sunday morning left one man dead and two others seriously injured. The assailant believed to be in his 60s, went on a rampage around 10:30 am, attacking random shoppers in the market. Witnesses described scenes of chaos, with people screaming and fleeing in terror as the attacker lunged at his victims.

Police were called at 10:40 am after receiving reports of multiple stabbings. A man in his 60s was found dead at the scene, while a man and a woman were taken to the hospital with stab wounds. Authorities have not disclosed their conditions, but they are not treating the incident as terrorism. Investigators believe it may be linked to the suspect’s mental health.

A fabric seller who witnessed the attack said the man appeared to be stabbing people indiscriminately. Another vendor, who chased the attacker, managed to restrain him with the help of another bystander until police arrived.

“I’ve been living around here for 42 years, and I’ve never seen anything like it,” said resident Benaisa Lourdjane, who helped subdue the suspect.

Commander Peter Stevens expressed condolences to the victim’s family and confirmed that the attacker was quickly arrested. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
