Rokhsana Fiaz, the first woman elected mayor of London, is suing Newham Council, claiming discrimination. The case was heard privately at the East London Tribunal Centre on Thursday, and it is understood that the claims involve racism and bullying.
A council spokesperson confirmed that Mayor Fiaz had made the claim and that the matter would not interfere with the council’s regular functions. “The case is listed for a preliminary hearing in private,” the spokesperson said, adding that Fiaz, like any other citizen, is entitled to assert her rights if she believes they have been violated.
The spokesperson also emphasized that the existence of the claim would not affect the council’s decision-making or processes. The specifics of the case are confidential until it is heard in open court.
Fiaz, who has served as mayor of Newham since 2018, is asserting her rights in the tribunal, seeking justice for what she alleges to be discriminatory treatment. The council has declined to comment further, noting that it is for the courts to assess the validity of the claim.
