In the wake of violent attacks on Israelis and Jews in Amsterdam, Israeli President Isaac Herzog spoke urgently with King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands today, condemning the brutal acts of aggression that took place overnight. Herzog described the violence as a painful reminder of dark periods in Jewish history, underscoring the severity of the situation and calling for immediate action to address the growing wave of antisemitic attacks.
The President stressed the need for Dutch authorities to take swift and comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of Jews and Israelis within the country. He also demanded the immediate evacuation of all Israelis who wished to return home, particularly those still unaccounted for following the attacks.
King Willem-Alexander expressed deep shock and horror at the violence, acknowledging the Netherlands’ historical failures to protect the Jewish community, both during World War II and in this recent incident. “We failed the Jewish community of the Netherlands during World War II, and last night we failed again,” the King told Herzog, vowing that the Dutch government would spare no effort to guarantee the safety of Israelis and facilitate their return to Israel.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof also condemned the attacks and assured Herzog that the government was taking all necessary steps to protect Israeli citizens. He committed to supporting the safe return of Israelis and ensuring their well-being during this difficult time.
