Six individuals have been charged with membership of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a proscribed terrorist organisation, following an investigation by the Counter Terrorism Command. The accused, arrested on November 27, were charged under Section 11 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
The six charged are: Turkan Ozcan, 59, from Edmonton; Mazlum Sayak, 27, from South Woodford; Berfin Kerban, 31, from Haggerston; Ali Boyraz, 62, from Tottenham; Ercan Akbal, 56, from Leyton; and Agit Karatas, 23, from Hackney. They are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on December 10.
A seventh individual, a 31-year-old man, was released without charge on December 8. Acting Commander Helen Flanagan of the Counter Terrorism Command called the charges “very serious” and emphasized the thoroughness of the investigation aimed at ensuring public safety.
Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines acknowledged the significant impact on the Kurdish community, particularly in the areas affected. Additional police patrols are being conducted to reassure residents.
The PKK is banned in the UK, and membership carries severe legal consequences. The arrests have sparked protests within London’s Kurdish community, who have voiced concerns over the investigation. Police continue to engage with local communities to address any issues and provide updates.
