Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed the 347 bus route, which connects Romford and Ockendon, will be scrapped from January 18 due to low usage. The route, identified as one of the least used in a recent TfL review, was originally set for withdrawal in 2023 but was kept under review following public consultation.
Hornchurch and Upminster MP Julia Lopez criticized the decision, calling it “incredibly disappointing.” She argued that the route could have been preserved by merging it with other services, such as the 497, to maintain connections for residents in areas like Cathedral Estate and Clay Tye Road.
Havering Council leader Ray Morgon also expressed concern, highlighting the impact on commuters in the area already facing challenges from the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). Morgon suggested that TfL should focus on improving transport infrastructure in outer London rather than spending on rebranding efforts, like the renaming of the London Overground in the Havering area.
TfL stated that the 347 will be largely replaced by the 346, with the 370 also covering part of the service. Alternative routes, such as the 248 and 269, will continue to serve affected areas. TfL’s director of public transport service planning, Geoff Hobbs, acknowledged the negative impact on some passengers, including those with accessibility needs, and confirmed ongoing reviews of the bus network.
