Chris LaCivita, a campaign adviser to US President-elect Donald Trump, has called the UK’s incoming ambassador to the US, Lord Peter Mandelson, “an absolute moron.” LaCivita, who co-managed Trump’s presidential campaign, criticized the British government’s choice, claiming it was replacing a respected diplomat with Mandelson, who he referred to as a “moron.”

Mandelson, a former senior figure in the UK Labour Party, has a history of critical remarks about Trump, calling him “little short of a white nationalist” and “reckless.” LaCivita’s comments stem from this history, especially Mandelson’s past criticisms of Trump, including calling him a “danger to the world.”

Lord Mandelson, appointed to replace Dame Karen Pierce, expressed pride in his new role, calling it “a great honour.” The 71-year-old is expected to play a key role in US-UK relations during a pivotal time for diplomacy. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer praised Mandelson for his experience, stating that he would strengthen UK-US ties.

Mandelson, once known as the “Prince of Darkness” during his years in New Labour, has softened his language on Trump recently, emphasizing the importance of establishing a new relationship with the incoming administration. However, his past statements remain a point of contention for some, including LaCivita.

The appointment marks a notable shift in UK diplomatic appointments, with Mandelson’s political background standing out from the usual career diplomats in such roles.
