President-elect Donald Trump’s 2020 peace plan for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict could be revisited during his second term, according to Brian Hook, a former senior aide tapped to help lead Trump’s State Department transition. Hook, who previously served as Trump’s special envoy for Iran, confirmed in a CNN interview that much of the groundwork in the original peace proposal remains relevant.

The plan proposed that Israel annex its West Bank settlements while offering Palestinians a path to a semi-contiguous state in the remaining territory. While it was rejected by the Palestinian Authority, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed cautious support, although his settler allies, now part of his coalition, opposed the idea due to the inclusion of a Palestinian state.

Hook addressed the ongoing importance of the plan, particularly in light of recent geopolitical developments. When asked about Saudi Arabia’s stance on normalization with Israel, Hook emphasized that the 2020 proposal met many of the conditions Riyadh seeks for peace with Israel. However, he acknowledged that the brutal Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, have shifted the focus for many Israelis, with security taking priority over peace negotiations at the moment.

As Trump prepares to assume office again, sources indicate Hook will play a key role in guiding the transition team, potentially bringing the peace plan back into focus for the new administration.
