Ukraine’s Jewish communities are preparing to celebrate Hanukkah for the third consecutive year under wartime conditions. The Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine (FJCU) organizes extensive holiday activities, ensuring that the festival of lights reaches 169 Jewish communities nationwide, including remote towns with few Jewish residents.
Chabad emissaries will host public menorah lighting ceremonies in major city centers, with the national ceremony taking place in Maidan Square. Special kits, containing menorahs, psalms books, children’s gifts, and sweets, are being distributed to Jewish families across Ukraine. In areas affected by ongoing bombings, lighting ceremonies will be held indoors at synagogues for safety.
This year, “Heroes of Ukraine,” local Jews who have fought on the frontlines and received medals for valor, will be honored with the privilege of lighting the central menorahs.
Additionally, in response to the severe economic conditions, humanitarian food packages will be distributed to Jewish families, containing staples like flour, rice, and sweets, ensuring that Hanukkah remains a bright occasion despite the hardships.
Rabbi Meir Stambler, chairman of FJCU, expressed hope for miracles, praying for victory in the war and the swift return of hostages.
